A Comparison of Response Surface and Factorial Designs in Agricultural Research AgEcon
Williams, Robert J.; Baker, J.R..
The use of response surface designs in preference to factorial designs in agriculture has become widely discussed and recommended. This paper simulates data for comparable response surface and factorial designs and uses this to demonstrate the similarities between the designs and their analyses and at the same time to point out some of the customary differences in their analyses. More particularly, it aims to show: (a) that for any design a reduction in the number of plots sown reduces the reliability of the results, and (b) that both a response surface design and a factorial design allow the calculation of estimated equations of response surfaces.

A contribution to the knowledge of the genus Spheginobaccha De Meijere (Diptera, Syrphidae) Naturalis
Doesburg Sr., P.H. van.
In 1883 J. M. F. Bigot described Speghina? macropoda after one female from "Birmania". Bigot used to place a question mark after the generic name when he was not sure that the described species did belong to the genus in question. The not forwardly produced oral margin, the presence of a facial tubercle, the spinose hind femora, and the wing-venation created a doubt about the correct use of the name Sphegina. He thought macropoda might need a new genus. De Meijere (1908) erected the new genus Spheginobaccha with Sphegina macropoda Bigot as type-species. He recorded one ♂ and one ♀ from Semarang, Java. He described both specimens and figured the wing. Though in many respects his female answered to Bigot's description of the female, De Meijere found also...

A contribution to the phytogeography of the Angmagssalik area, East Greenland, with special reference to Chionophily Naturalis
Molenaar, J.G. de.
As delimited by Polunin (1951), the Arctic is situated on the Northern hemisphere North of (1) a line 50 miles North of the coniferous forest line, (2) the Northern limit of microphanerophytic growth, or (3) the Nordenskjöld line, according to the formula V = 9-0,1K. According to this delimination the whole of Greenland belongs to the arctic region. Within the Arctic a subdivision in low- and high-arctic regions is usually recognized. Larsen (1960) marks this transition on the East coast of Greenland near Cape Dalton. Low-arctic East Greenland thus stretches from 60° to 69°30' N. lat. The Angmagssalik area in Southeast Greenland ranges from circa 65° to 67°20' N. lat. Between the Sermilik and the Kangerdlugssuatsiak fjords to the West and East, Denmark...

GLória,N.A.; Vitti,G.C..

A fossil skull fragment of a walrus from the mouth of the river Scheldt (Netherlands) Naturalis
Feen, P.J. van der.
An occipito-parietal skull fragment of a male specimen of Odobenus antverpiensis (Rutten, 1907), from the mouth of the River Scheldt (Netherlands) is described and figured. The animal lived probably about the transition Scaldisian-Merxemian (Pliocene-Pleistocene). It lived in coastal marine surroundings rich in shell-bearing molluscs and is not necessarily an indication of cool conditions.

A migratory flight of hover-flies (Diptera, Syrphidae) observed in Austria Naturalis
Jeekel, C.A.W.; Overbeek, H..
During an excursion sponsored by the Entomological Department of the Zoölogisch Museum, Amsterdam, to the village of Vent, Inner Oetztal, Tirol, Austria, the authors and the other participants, W. Dekkers, W. N. Ellis, Mrs. A. C. Ellis-Adam, W. van Raamsdonk, and H. J. L. T. Stammeshaus, witnessed the interesting phenomenon of a migratory flight of syrphid flies. The migration was first noticed around 9.20 a.m. on August 9th, 1967, when the senior author in the valley of the river Venter Ache near Vent saw a great number of insects flying at high speed into one direction. Under the impression at first that it concerned a nuptial flight of a large ant species, a specimen was caught in the air. When this turned out to be a hover-fly, it was at once realized...

A MODEL OF THE NEW ZEALAND SHEEP INDUSTRY AgEcon
Rayner, A.C..
The paper presents a model of the New Zealand Sheep Industry which predicts animal numbers in various sex/age categories. The explanatory variables used are the prices of the end products of the industry and time, to represent technological change. Prices are found to have a significant, though delayed, effect on farmers' stock decisions. Furthermore, the significance of time demonstrates improvements in some forms of animal husbandry. The relative failure of the model's latest predictions emphasizes the importance of irrational optimism in the industry.

A monograph of the freshwater Bryozoa-Phylactolaemata Naturalis
Lacourt, A.W..
1. This paper presents the taxonomy of the Bryozoa Phylactolaemata. The group is found to contain a number of series. The present classification reveals that a number of specific names are synonyms. 2. The evolution of the group is described on the basis of the development of the zoarium and the species-specific statoblasts. 3. The Phylactolaemata are to be considered as a group that have completed their evolution with the development of giant species with giant and specialized forms of statoblasts; this has been accompanied by a reduction in the number of tentacles. 4. The distribution of the species was assessed from the available data. The main concentration is found to occur in the southern hemisphere. 5. The distribution supports the conclusion that...

A new Aschelminth, probably related to the Priapulida Naturalis
Land, J. van der.
INTRODUCTION Two years ago I found two specimens of a curious animal in a sample of coral sand from Curaçao. It superficially resembled the larva of priapulids, animals that are restricted to cold water. The condition of the specimens did not permit of a description and I did not succeed in determining the group to which the species could possibly belong. Later I happened to see a paper by Remane (1963) in which he gives a simple figure of "a not yet described animal from the sandy bottom of the Red Sea". I immediately recognized it as a relative of the species from Curaçao. Upon request Professor Remane informed me that he had fixed some specimens, but that these were lost. He had not found more material of the species and he had not heard of these...

A new Syndesmis from Saint-Barthélemy, Lesser Antilles (Neorhabdocoela) Naturalis
Marcus, Ernst.
Mrs. EVELINE DU BOIS-REYMOND MARCUS found the turbellarian described below, which belongs to the Umagillidae (Neorhabdocoela, Dalyellioida), in a vial of Dr. P. WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK’S collection of Caribbean polyclads. The species of Syndesmis are known to live in the body cavity and the intestine, especially the rectum, of sea-urchins, so that the present specimens might have been evacuated together with the faeces. The last revision of the Umagillidae (STUNKARD & CORLISS 1951) was followed by papers of WESTBLAD (1953), HICKMAN (1955, 1956), HICKMAN & OLSEN (1955), and HYMAN (1960). Their results suggest continuing the key of STUNKARD & CORLISS. AS the present species has a simple, not H-shaped, intestine, paired testes, and paired ovaries, the...

A new Todea from New Guinea with remarks on the generic delimitation in recent Osmundaceae (Filices) Naturalis
Hennipman, E..
The identification of some thousands of ferns from New Guinea by the late Dr A. H. G. Alston (1940) resulted in the description of but comparatively few new species. His conclusion, that the fern flora of New Guinea ‘is now fairly well known’ may be right in a general way, but continuous collecting performed after his paper was published proved the existence of many more novelties. One of these is a new species of Todea, a representative of the Osmundaceae, a primitive family of ferns, which dates back to the Palaeozoicum (Hirmer, 1938). A recent study by Hewitson (1962) about the comparative morphology of the living Osmundaceae inspired me to make some remarks on the delimitation of the other recent genera.
